What is Mindful Nutrition?

Mindful Nutrition is about becoming more conscious of what you eat, mindful of how you eat it, responsible for where it comes from and conscious of the impact your food choices are having on your own health and well-being as well as on the planet. 

 

For me the journey took me on the Whole Food Plant Based lifestyle and I would love to share this with you.

What is a whole food plant based diet? (WFPB)

A whole-food, plant-based diet is centered on whole, unrefined, or minimally refined plants. It’s a diet based on fruits, vegetables, tubers, whole grains, and legumes; and it excludes or minimizes meat (including chicken and fish), dairy products, and eggs, as well as highly refined foods like bleached flour, refined sugar, and oil.

Finding my ideal diet.  WFPB!

The first exposure I had to the WFPB diet was from the documentary Forks Over Knives.  I would say, this documentary literally changed my life.  It had a profound effect on me. From the minute I had finished watching it I had to learn more about WFPB and so my researching journey began. I needed to learn more about the difference between being vegetarian as this was what I thought I was and for me a vegan meaning was just too much of a stretch.  I needed to learn more.

 

I began to literally devour every ‘food’ related documentary I could and thanks to Netflix and I Tunes I was able to literally chew my way through a long list of other life changing documentaries.  

 

Many of these documentaries featured the same group of doctors and nutritionists and I definitely became a groupie.  I signed up to each of the newsletters, followed them on Facebook and You tube.  Plus books were added to my kindle and my bookshelf at great paces.  I was literally converted and needed to know more and more. 

Over the course of 6 months I had fully educated myself up on what the why’s and how’s of eating a whole food plant based diet and I was utterly sold. 

 

I was very black and white in the early days and put a lot of rules around myself.  Today I have softened around the extremes and fallen into a more mindful way of eating that fits with my body, my family, my budget and my view of the my impact on the planet.  I highly encourage you do your own research and the following books and documentaries are the best place to start.  I would also highly recommend you follow any of the work of some of the top plant based health professionals. Then make the most mindful choices for yourself.
